Congratulations!
The main part of the buffalo population in the Greek territory is located in Kerkini.
According to the prevailing opinion, the Greek buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) has been introduced from Asia. They settled in the area in the 13th century living until today.
According to another version, buffaloes have allegedly lived in the area for 2,500 years when Xerxes transported his army’s supplies by crossing the river Struma.
They are also called ‘water buffaloes’, as they are water-loving animals that spend much of the day in the waters of Lake Kerkini.
