Approximately 1600 buffaloes live in the area of the lake Kerkini.

Until the 1990s they were an endangered species. From a population of 75,000 in 1950 across the country, it reached only 600 in 1992. Since then, a programme to protect and conserve the species as a rare breed has been put in place.

As a result, today their population has recovered and their numbers are now close to 2000 water buffaloes, of which 1600 are found around Kerkini.

Kerkini lake is one of the 10 Wetlands of International Importance in Greece (also known as Ramsar Wetlands).

At least 300 species of birds have been observed in the lakes and the bays that surround them, of which 50 are included in the Red List of the Birds of Greece. A total of 10 species of birds nest in mixed colonies in the riverside forest, in significant numbers for Greece and Europe.
In the area of ​​Lake there is the largest number of buffaloes in Greece, which are animals adapted to living in wetlands.

The biodiversity of the area is very great. In addition to birds, the presence of other species such as amphibians (11 species), reptiles (26 species), mammals (>58 species), fish (30 species), plants (>800 species) and invertebrates (at least 4700) is also important.

In the Valley of Agioi Anargyroi there are many sports facilities such as the indoor swimming pool that stands out from the architectural construction and the indoor gym of Serres where various competitions are held (local, national, pan-European, etc.).

The Valley of Agioi Anargyroi offers the visitor good food and endless entertainment. Along the entire length of the street there are entertainment and catering centers such as cafes, taverns, restaurants, cinemas and bars that operate in the summer months providing enjoyment and refreshment.

The Acropolis of Koulas ('Tower of Orestes') is a Byzantine building of the 9th century, built on an ancient fortress.

Its foundation dates back to 1270, when the hieromonk Ioannikios from Serres settled in the area, together with his orphaned nephew Joachim, renovating the dilapidated church that existed here and organizing the first monastic community..

The monastery Timios Prodromos was developed into a great spiritual center, acquired great wealth, and received the stauropigian privilege. Gennadius Scholarios, the first ecumenical patriarch after the Fall of Constantinople, also retired, died and was buried here in 1472.

During the period of the Turkish occupation, the monastery maintained its privileges and in the 19th century a Greek and priestly school operated here. In 1913, as well as during the two world wars, it suffered serious damage and looting by the Bulgarians, especially its valuable archive and rich library.

The mosque of Ahmed Pasha, which was built at the end of the 15th century, is one of the most important Ottoman monuments that survive today in Serres. It is considered one of the most beautiful Muslim mosques in European Turkey.
